  1. Kool Jazz is a compilation made up of the jazzier side of Kool & The Gang selected from their earlier De-Lite recordings. These guys were a total class act, and the music on here is a fantastic collection to showcase just how cool these guys really where.

Though barely over a half an hour long, Kool and the Gang is a blast of a record containing strong elements that would become the band's trademarks: smooth melodies, suave rhythms, and brassy horns. This is one of Kool & the Gang's jazzier albums and a strong debut worth checking out, though less accessible than any of their later pop recordings.

The set's designed to focus on the jazzier side of Kool & The Gang – and it sifts through the first few albums to come up with some of the more sophisticated (yet still totally funky!) numbers by the band, giving a good picture of the many sides of their talents, and also adding in a few other tracks that we haven't found on.

Even better is the track ‘Love Song’, which won me over instantly, as the guys utilise Kool and the Gang’s track ‘Summer Madness’, from their ‘Light Of The Worlds’ album from I have lost count how many times this song has underpinned a Soul or Jazz song, however, Portrait’s faithful use really does enhance the track.
